Road trip through the south-west – day 3

1. Februar 2010

Day 3
Denmark is another of these small towns in the middle of nowhere. Nice to look at and have a warm pie for lunch but for no gold in the world I would live there.
Before Denmark we visited a nice wood craft studio where many of the local artists sell there products. Here you really can spend some amount of money.
After Denmark we visited the tree top walk. A metal walk ramp which is 40 m over the floor at the highest point. There are some really big and old Kari and Jarra trees (not as impressive as the red woods in California but very nice though)

We went on to Walpole and didn’t stop – same thing as Denmark – the next town was Northcliffe where we wanted to look for accommodation for the night. On the way we stopped on a remote camping site in the middle of the woods. Very basic without any facilities.
There Nicole did see her first alive Kangaroo. It was not alone, a whole herd was feeding on a meadow.

Northcliffe was very disappointing. we did not find the Bed & Breakfast place we looked for and there was no pub for a nice Friday evening beer. So we decided to go on to Pemberton which is the next big settlement in this area (round about 1.400 people)
Because it was late and it rained all day long combined with Grey sky and cold temperatures we decided to take a bungalow for the night.
It was really nice to have our own facility’s.

Solar news

Together with Durmus I installed my first grid system in Australia.
It took us around 7 hours for 10 panels. We installed a 190 Watt evergreen panel. They have a unusual cell shape and look just lovely on the roof. They also have been the last of their kind to be installed because Evergreen stopped the manufacturing of this series over a year ago.

The inverter is a 3.6 kW from a company we don’t want to mention here… ;-)
It was a interesting experience and a good opportunity to get a bit more colored skin.

We also had a very good view on to the worlds best installed hot water system!

Beside this little success the solar industry in Australia is pretty much f***ed. Let’s hope that the government is getting on with their several ideas for feed in tariffs. And lets also hope that the Australian’s start to understand that black tile roofs, big houses without insulation and huge LCD TV’s are not the future!

Road trip through the south-west

Day 2
We decided to stay another day at the camping site to have enough time to see all the nice things in and around Albany.
The city with its 15.000 citizens is older than Perth and has some nice places, many old houses and WWF Activists which just chat with you without asking you to join the club or free whales from Aquariums. Actually Chris was really nice and it was interesting to talk with him.
Before our walk through the city we went to the “royal princess fort on the top of mount Adelaide. It was fantastic. Big Guns, large guns and even more bigger guns. We loved it, except Nicole…. ;-)

Then we visited some boring natural sites *smile*. No, it was really great, we had stormy weather, it was cold and raining sometimes. We visited the Gap, the natural bridge and the blow wholes at Torndirrup National Park . All this sites are unique and really worth a visit.
Another night at the camp and then we started our tour to the big trees in the old Karri Forest around Denmark and all over the south-west.

Road Trip through the South-West

27. November 2009

Day 1
Nicole stayed 6 days already in Perth when we finally started our road trip. The first destination was Albany
and the weather forecast was more catastrophic then anything else.

Our way led us along Albany Highway straight towards Albany (400 km) bypassing the Stirling Range (kind of schwaebische Alb – highest hill in WA )
Nini did not allow me to “shortcut” through the Stirling Range to get a glimpse on the up to 1.000 metre high hilltops (a few of you may know the famous Doerner Orientation Gene which allows only the Doerner men to find the best shortcuts, the best restaurants and the most fabulous sites… )

After 4 hours driving through constantanious rain, boiling coffee on Nicoles left hand and manny manny bogan maniac truck drivers and their road trains we finaly arrived Albany and found our camping site. A very nice place situated at Middleton beach (direct beach entry through the dunes) with all the luxuary things a camper could need.
We had a good first night in the tent. It rained sometimes and it was a bit cold but the day was OK with occasionally sunshine.

Today my sister arrived in Perth for her 3 week vacation in Australia.
We already went to the beach and we had a nice dinner together with the family of Durmus.
Next week we are starting our trip down south towards Margareth River and Albany.
